Description
When a PC used for device monitoring or as a server crashes this
may cause problems if the PC is not rebooted very soon. This may
be difficult to do if the system is not monitored by a person.
Using the USB-AutoReset, the system reboot could be done automatically
without human intervention. The USB-AutoReset is connected to USB
bus to receive life signals and with a little cord to the reset
port of the main board. The device supplies a reset input which
may be connected with the reset switch. This will keep the reset
button alive.
If the USB-AutoReset did not get a life signal for some time, the
relais inside the device will activate the reset. This is identical
to pressing the reset button of the PC. The reset could also be
initiated by a command received from the PC. This is used by ClewareControl
to do a reset when special conditions are detected (see ClewareControl
documentation).
The number of reset operations are counted inside the device. One
counter is used for monitoring the timeout resets and another counts
the resets initiated by a command. ClewareControl displays these
numbers in the state view.
When a reset is done, the first relais is activated for about 2
seconds and is then released to allow the PC to boot. The second
relais will also be activated but will be held in this state until
a new life signal was detected. Ths could be used to control e.g.
a dialer.
The size of the USB-AutoReset is about 40 x 90 x 23 mm in size.
The contacts will be able to switch 30 V @ 0.5 A non-inductive load.
On the top of the housing a LED is located to indicate the state.
The LED is green if the PC is running and red if the a reset was
done. When the USB-AutoReset waits longer than 10 seconds for a
sign of life the LED turns to yellow to indicate a kind of prealarm.
The total count of done resets is stored in the USB-AutoReset and
could be retrieved any time.
The USB-AutoReset should be operated in inner rooms only and should
be protected against humidity. The permissible operating temperature
range is 10° - 60° Celsius.
The usage of the USB-AutoReset is strictly prohibited in
the following applications:
- medical application of any kind
- production and processing of food
- when the failure of the device will harm people
The USB-AutoReset receives the signs of life from the software
ClewareControl. The software is running with Windows® variants that
support USB. (® Microsoft Windows is a registered trademark of the
Microsoft Corporation). The device may receive the signals also
from a little application USBwatch supplied on the CD or from a
user program which uses the API to send the signals.
No special device drivers are neccessary to use the Cleware USB
devices. The already installed device drivers are sufficient.
An application program interface (API) to drive the USB-AutoReset
from customer programs is part of the delivery. The API bundles
some very simple functions for opening and calming the device. The
complex USB device handling is hided.
Linux support is also available. An application
program interface (API) is supplied.
Every USB-AutoReset own its unique serial number. This make it easy
to identify the devices even when the USB plug position changes
or new USB devices are connected. The serial number is accessible
through the API and could therefore be used as a simple dongle.
The product USB-AutoReset comes with a 2-year software update service
via Internet free of charge. New versions are made available in
the Cleware download area and may be downloaded for free.
